Tupper dashed ahead, but Freydolf ambled along at a slower pace, mindful of his surroundings, for the sprawling stoneworks were ultimately his responsibility. Their familiarity grounded him, their richness inspired him, and their complexity meant there was always a decent chance of spotting something he’d never noticed before.

In a baffling blend of trans-continental traditions, Aurelius touched his forehead, his lips, and his chest, then bowed low. With careless deference, he intoned, “Sprat, for your foresight, your forays, and your forbearance where this big oaf is concerned, you have earned my gratitude! I shall proclaim it in Verit, Terse, Prose, and Skrit!”

Of all the Meadowsweet siblings, Tupper was the hardest to describe. He fit in well enough with his looks, for he bore a strong resemblance to their father; however, his personality had always been rather vague. Although no one would have gone so far as to call him weak, Tupper didn’t seem to have any strengths.

CHIT-CHAT: Harrow

The Statuary by Raka, header

The Keeper charged through the Harrow’s front door, bellowing, “Aurelius!”

“In here,” his brother-in-law sang out.

Following the sound of his voice into the sleeping chamber, he found the man packing for his trip. Holding up two vests in slightly different shades of brown, he asked, “Chestnut or nutmeg?”

ART: Tupper [Galleries of Stone]

Triad Header

Tupper followed his daytime guardian, taking care not to let his hair get caught in overhanging branches. His last haircut had been near the end of the previous summer, so his white-blond curls were becoming difficult to manage. He often wondered if he could buck Flox tradition and let his hair grow out as long as Freydolf’s.

Tupper Meadowsweet’s whole perspective shifts when he joins Freydolf in the Statuary. The rush of new information would throw anyone off balance, but the boy proves nimbler than most. Distant mountains. Vast oceans. Diverse races. Strange lands. And a whisper of magic that lures him deep into Morven’s galleries. Today, I’m sharing a watercolor of a Tupper whose hair has gone a bit shaggier than is respectable for Flox boys. Continue reading ART: Tupper [Galleries of Stone]

MINNESOTA TRIP: Spotting a Harrow

Blog Header

Hello from my hometown! Those familiar with this blog may remember that while I currently make my home in Southern California, I’m originally from a small town in Minnesota. From time to time, I come back to the north country to visit my folks, who still live in the same old farmhouse where I grew up. Many aspects of the Galleries of Stone trilogy find their roots in my rural upbringing—rolling pastures, garden fare, and flocks of chickens. On past trips, I spotted another tie-in. Something I’d forgotten even though I’m sure we drove past it a few times each week. Today, we stopped to snap a picture! Continue reading MINNESOTA TRIP: Spotting a Harrow
