Both of these have a fairy tale feel … but they’re not all sweetness and light. Definite dark undercurrents.

Bedside Book. I don’t always make time for print books. A lot of my reading happens while I’m on-the-go, doing housework, hitting the treadmill, etc. So it’s easiest if I put on my headphones and pick a title on my e-reader. Buuut, I have prodigious bookshelves, and a recent dusting & reorganization of those reminded me that I have some great books waiting for me.

This is my current read, which is perfect for reading in print because it’s fabulously illustrated. Fall feels in July? I don’t mind. This one’s a Halloween story that leans into a local legend/ghost story.
A to Z Challenge. It’s taken me a little longer than usual to finish the A to Z Reading Challenge over on Great Middle Grade Reads, mostly because I’ve had a formidable writing/editing schedule this year. But here it is, my current read, which begins with Z.

After this, I’ve given myself permission to read willy-nilly through my To Read pile, which is made up of a combination of e-books & print editions that are patiently waiting their turn for my attention. Next Goal? Catch up! I’m (so, so far) behind on my goal of reading 100 middle grade books in 2025.

Both of these are set in alternate histories!

Are you reading Deuce? Chapters are short, so they’re swift as Ulrica’s thrown blades, but they’re also worth their weight in Harrow gold. I hope you’ll consider supporting my writing by “subscribing” to the story. Become a patron at any tier, and you’ll be able to read along. CJ Milbrandt on Patreon >>
